BEFORE WATCHING :How do you feel about corporations? Do they make they a positive contribution to our economy? Are they a threat?

PART ONE: HOW CORPORATIONS RELATE TO PEOPLE

Which of the following speakers…?

1-Friedman ————–a-blames a corporation for the execution of some activists
2-Chomsky —————b-portrays CEOs who sack workers as helpless victims of the system
3-Gibara——————-c-compares helpless and frustrated activists with CEO’s positive role
4-Moody ——————d-separates the goodness of individuals from the evils of the system
5-Narrator —————e-absolves corporations of moral responsibility

ROLE PLAY – The International People’s Court is going to investigate the death of the Niger Delta hangings. All of you have been called to give your opinion about the moral responsibility for the deaths of the activists.

STUDENT A: You are Milton Friedman, 1973 Nobel Prize in Economy. You are the father of neoliberal capitalism. Market freedom is sacred and justifies all collateral effects.

STUDENT B: You are Moody, a CEO for Shell at the time of the hangings. You devoted a lot of Shell’s money to development projects in the third world after that.

STUDENT C:  You are Chomsky, an expert in International Politics and an influential thinker. You are against corporations’ disregard for human rights and democracy.

STUDENT D: You direct the research team of the International People’s Court. You feel the moral responsability should be extended beyond the Nigerian government.

PLAYLET: Choose a scene for your group. Write it in about 200 words. You may add a narrator to help with descriptions.

SCENE ONE: Vandana Shiva’s daughter is flying to US for a job interview with Barry and meets Phil Knight on the plane.

SCENE TWO:Anderson wants Barry to stop the fake interviews and start working ethically but Brown has been eavesdropping.

SPEAKING ACTIVITY

OPTION ONE: You are members of the Intergovernmental Panel against corporate abuse and off-shore economies. Discuss a strategy for 2020 and agree on a list of objectives.

OPTION TWO: Prepare a presentation about corporations individually. Vote for the best presentation in your group.
