SUBJECT QUESTIONS November 12, 2015

Filed under: Uncategorized — anagomezgarcia @ 10:22 am

Apart from questions where the main verb is “to be” and the combinatin of “have” with “got ” in the simple present, there is an exception for the rule (wh-)+auxiliary verb+subject+main verb. It is the kind of question where the subject is missing. Read thes sentences where the subject is underlined:

The President of the Republic is going to give a speech.

Three black cats were sitting on the wall.

My sisterś friend came to visit John.

The white elephant has escaped from the imaginary cage.

This emerald ring is made of gold.

———–

The question is identical (*) except for the pronoun who/which/what:

The President of the Republic is going to give a speech.

Who is going to give a speech?

Three black cats were sitting on the wall.

Who was sitting on the wall?

My sisterś friend came to visit John.

Who came to visit John?

The white elephant has escaped from the imaginary cage.

Who has escaped from the imaginary cage?

This emerald ring is made of gold.

What is made of gold?

———————

If only part of the subject is missing, the rule is the same(**), except for the bits of the subject we know:

The President of this Republic is going to give a speech.

Which President is going to give a speech?

Three white cats were sitting on the wall.

How many cats were sitting on the fence?

My sisterś friend came to visit John.

Whose friend came to visit John?

The white elephant has escaped from the imaginary cage.

What colour elephant has escaped from the imaginary cage?

This emerald ring is made of gold.

Which ring is made of gold?

(*) The verb is in third person singular.

(**) but there is a great variety of “wh- word combinations”.
