Enviromentalist journalist G.Monbiot
- Anything to Declare? February 24, 2012Christopher Booker’s undisclosed interests illustrate the need for transparency in journalism. By George Monbiot, published on the Guardian’s website 24th February 2012 I see Peter Gleick, the man who obtained and leaked the devastating documents from the Heartland Institute, as a democratic hero. I do not think he should have apologised, nor do […]Monbiot

In my opinion the solution is quite simple, and hard at the same time… we must get used to consume less..less energy, less fuel, less things, eat less meat and more vegetables and “live local”..
we’ve been doing an amount of crazy things, but this doesn’t mean we were doing right.. we need to find out how to live without so many things..it won’t be easy for most people, but if we dont want nuclears we’ll have to adjust our necessities.
The idea of decreasing consumption of energy and materials is shared by everyone in the environmentalist movement. Calculating one´s footprint and setting progressively shrinking targets is a great way of diminishing our impact on the earth´s ecosystems in the personal sphere, which is, they say, about a third of the earth´s footprint. (An independent calculator is myfootprint.org)
The industrial part is not in our hands unless we become international activists and sign against the Durban summit renunciation and support international environmentalist organizations like Avaaz (aavaz.com) or Greenpeace . The Cochabamba watchdog takes a critical look at all the summits.
As for nuclear energy, what Monbiot proposes is recycling nuclear waste that is already there (not creating it anew), making the unused 95% useful in a safe way, thus removing dangerous waste which is already there as well.
In previous articles he has agreed with the rest of the antinuclear front about the lies of the antinuclear lobby, which sells the idea that nuclear power generates all the electricity we need.
It is still scary because humans are fallible, but the issue of nuclear waste management is a thorny one, unless you agree with Monbiot´s new position.
